The Charlotte Hornets face a massive choice this offseason. A three-team deal could send Brandon Miller to the Golden State Warriors while bringing Paolo Banchero to town. Heavy.com reported a specific proposal that would reshape the entire franchise. The Hornets would trade their young star for a different kind of talent.
The Golden State Pitch
Why would the Warriors even want to make this move? They are stuck in a tough spot right now. The team is not estimated to win over 40 games this year. They are also expected to miss the playoffs again. They need a new face to lead them after Stephen Curry. Miller fits that bill perfectly. The Warriors would receive Miller in exchange for Moses Moody and two future picks, while Orlando’s Paolo Banchero heads to Charlotte. It is a bold move for a team that needs to win now.
Miller is only 23 years old. He has the skillset to thrive in Golden State’s pace-and-space system. He is not ball-dominant like some other young stars. He thrives as a movement shooter. He hit a career-best 38.3% from deep last year, averaging 3.1 three-pointers per contest. These numbers are solid. The Warriors believe those stats will skyrocket playing alongside Curry’s gravity. More than $60M in cap space is expected for the team during the 2027 offseason. This trade gets them a future star without using all that cash.
The Hornets’ New Core
For Charlotte, this deal makes a lot of sense. The Hornets have already moved on from LaMelo Ball. It is time to build around a new franchise player. The proposal sends Paolo Banchero to the Hornets. Banchero is an ISO-centric player who thrives in the midrange. This creates a different dynamic for Charles Lee’s offense. He offers a better co-star for Kon Knueppel. The Magic would receive Naz Reid, Royce O’Neale, Brandin Podziemski, and two first-round picks. This clears the logjam for the Hornets.
There is a clear reason to make this swap. On average, both Knueppel and Miller launch between eight and nine threes each game. That is a lot of redundancy in their skillsets. You do not need two players doing the exact same thing. Banchero brings a different look. He can create his own shot in the paint. This gives the Hornets a balanced attack. The team can build a solid core around Knueppel and Banchero. They can finally move forward with a clear plan.
In his three Charlotte seasons, Miller has displayed hints of future stardom. He averaged 19.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists. He is a great player. But he is not the right piece for this specific roster construction. The Hornets need to sell high while his value is at its peak. Waiting too long could cost them the chance to get Banchero. A second-apron status is forecast for the Magic during the 2027-28 campaign.
