The Carolina Panthers appear ready to hand Bryce Young a massive pay raise even as the team stumbles through a rocky season. Mike Florio wrote in a Pro Football Talk article, that the organization is “far down the road” toward a second contract for the young quarterback exceeding $50 million per year. That is a bold move for a player who just led the team to a 27-19 loss against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, Oct. 29.

Protecting the Investment

Young sits at 3-4 on the season, and his performance has been a wild ride for fans. The Carolina Panthers have played seven games this season. With that, so has Bryce Young’s. The stats show he has thrown for 1,921 yards and 13 touchdowns, which is solid production for a fourth-year player. But the context matters more than the raw numbers. The offensive line is a disaster, ranking 31st in pass-block win rate. Young has been pressured 64 times this season, which is the second most in the league. Paying him like a star while he faces constant hits feels like setting him up to fail.

The Cost of Waiting

Young is under contract through 2027, and the Panthers already picked up his fifth-year option worth a guaranteed $25.9 million. If they sign this new extension, they lock in a high salary before he has fully proven he can carry the team alone. The team has lost Brady Christensen, Taylor Moton, and Ikem Ekwonu to injuries, leaving the line depleted. Without those players, it is hard to judge if the quarterback is the real problem or just a victim of bad protection. If the team pays him $50 million a year, they must fix the line first.

Next Steps for the Franchise

The Panthers face the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Bank of America Stadium. Young needs to show he can win games even when the line struggles. If the player selected first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft performs poorly again, speculation regarding his future will grow. The team has to decide if the 2024 surge and 2026 flashes are enough to justify a huge contract. An agreement surpassing $50 million annually would signal that the organization thinks top-tier results can become standard. If the final weeks of 2026 do not strengthen that conviction, the reported advancement toward an extension might halt.
