Panthers Must Fix Left Tackle And Center Now

The Panthers offensive line is broken. Dave Canales needs to bench Luke Fortner and Rasheed Walker immediately to save the season.

The Carolina Panthers made a bold move on Monday by bringing back DeAngelo Hall to coach their cornerbacks. This comes right after the team fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and pass-game coordinator Jonathan Cooley following a 27-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The timing is risky because the secondary is already in deep trouble. Hall must rebuild a unit that lacks its best players before he can teach the basics.

A Familiar Face in a Broken Room

Hall knows this team well. In 2023 and 2024, Frank Reich and Dave Canales had him as the assistant defensive backs coach. Now he is back after an almost two-year absence. The Panthers need his experience because the current roster is a mess. Source material from The Big Lead notes that Hall was a three-time Pro Bowl cornerback who recorded 43 interceptions and 141 pass breakups over 14 seasons. He knows how to stop receivers, but he is stuck with a group that has no depth.

Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson Sr formed the starting tandem. He is out with injuries from Week 3. Will Lee III, a rookie, got a hamstring injury on Thursday Night Football while Akayleb Evans remains on injured reserve. Should Lee miss additional time, the Panthers have Malcolm DeWalt IV, Chau Smith-Wade, and practice squad players remaining. That is not a group ready for the NFL. Hall has to get them ready for Sunday, Nov. 8, when the Denver Broncos visit Bank of America Stadium.

The Clock is Ticking for the Defense

Todd Wash is now running the show as interim coordinator. He has to lean on Hall while the staff adjusts on short notice. The scheme probably will not change much, but Hall brings a level of expertise the team lost when Cooley left. According to Cat Crave, Hall was an exceptional performer in his playing days and never shied away from a fight. That grit is exactly what this defense needs right now.

Despite knowing key players would be out for a while when the season began, the Panthers faced injuries piling up faster than anyone expected. The loss to the Packers on Thursday, Oct. 29, showed how vulnerable the secondary is. Green Bay moved the ball whenever they wanted. Hall’s job is to stop that from happening again against Denver. He cannot wait for Horn or Jackson to get healthy. He has to make the players he has right now look better.

Can Hall Turn It Around?

Hall’s return is a smart hire, but the task is nearly impossible. As Cat Crave reported, Canales shared positive news about another player’s recovery, saying, “Every week seems like good milestones, good progression.” Canales added, “I can’t tell you exactly how close that is, how far that is. But I know that he’s trending in the right direction.”

The Panthers still do not have a clear timetable for when their top cornerbacks will return. The Broncos game is the first test. If Hall can get this unit to play smart, the Panthers might survive.
