Jeff Goodman sparked a loud debate by saying the Duke staff is “scared” of North Carolina’s new coach, Michael Malone. This claim ignores the hard truth about Malone’s recent past. Denver fired him right before the playoffs because he lost the locker room. His personality became too overbearing for a team that wanted to win.

The Ring Does Not Mean What You Think

Malone does have an NBA championship ring, but the story behind it is messy. The team that won that title let him go because they could not handle his style. He had a solid record year-to-year, yet the organization decided to move on. Duke fans should not be intimidated by a coach who could not keep his own players happy.

Duke has endured 54 years under two of basketball history’s finest coaches. They handled Dean Smith for 36 years and Ol’ Roy Williams for 18 years. Why should they fear Malone now? He is a grinder who works hard on recruiting, but he is not John Wooden or Bob Knight. The effort is impressive, but the fear is not justified.

Duke Is Already Better Than UNC

The Blue Devils are doing fine without needing to be afraid of anyone. Captain Caleb Foster believes this squad could be better than the teams from the last two years. He sees a team that can simulate championship games every day in practice. Foster stated perfectly: “We are blessed to have the opportunity to have such a good team, to where we could play 5 on 5 and simulate championship games every day unlike many other teams could”

Per Duke Basketball Report, UNC had to move on from Hubert Davis, and Malone has a chance to do well there. The ACC needs a strong UNC, but the league needs Duke to be the best. A weak rival helps no one, but a strong Duke keeps the conference relevant. The focus should be on Duke’s own stars, not the rumors about a new coach in Chapel Hill.

The Real Challenge Is On The Court

Malone will likely be a solid to excellent coach, but he is not a magic wand. He understands the time needed to build a program, just like Matt Doherty did before him. No one was scared of Doherty, and they should not be scared of Malone. The real test comes when the games start, not when the press releases go out.
