The Atlanta Falcons are walking into Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers without a starting quarterback. Head coach Kevin Stefanski admitted Wednesday that no decision has been made yet. “Not yet, but we’ll work through that this week,” Stefanski said. This hesitation creates a massive problem for a team that just lost its opener.
A Messy Room Full of Questions
The situation is a total mess with Tua Tagovailoa still hurting. He is not going to practice today, though he is getting better, per Sports Illustrated. His replacement, Cooper Rush, had a rough debut with a 2.6 QBR, per ESPN. Rush completed 12 of 22 passes for just 143 yards in the loss to Pittsburgh. He threw two interceptions and got sacked four times. The offense managed only 13 points. That is not enough to win.
Yet Stefanski refuses to pick a side. He told reporters, “I’m not ruling anyone out,” according to Sports Illustrated. This includes Michael Penix Jr., who is coming back from a torn ACL. According to NFL.com, Penix informed the coaching staff that he does not yet feel prepared to play. The coach also noted that Rush is not 100% healthy and dealt with back spasms on Saturday. Rush will take part fully in Wednesday’s practice despite this situation. It is a confusing mix of injury and uncertainty.
Why the Delay Hurts
Delaying a decision does not help the team prepare. Stefanski said, “With more reps, with more turns, that experience becomes confidence,” but the clock is ticking. The team needs answers now, not next week. Penix Jr. is fully cleared to practice, yet he has not indicated he is ready for live action. The rookie Jack Strand was the best quarterback in preseason, but he is not a starter material for Week 2.
Stefanski tried to defend the approach by saying, “It’s easy to highlight the quarterback position, but we have to stay on the field,” according to NFL.com. He also admitted, “Obviously, you want the turnovers back.” The Steelers capitalized on those mistakes. The Falcons lost Da’Shawn Hand to a quad injury in that game, which cost them on defense too. The one-year, $3 million deal for Hand is now a waste if the offense cannot score.
The Panthers Need to Punish the Hesitation
Carolina must attack this weakness immediately. If the Falcons cannot name a starter by Thursday, they will pay the price. Stefanski said, “Of course, ideal world, I think everybody, every team, you’d love to know who’s playing at every position,”. But this is not an ideal world. The Panthers defense should bring the pressure and force the Falcons into another mistake.
The coach stated, “But we’re going to be flexible and make sure that we’re giving all of our guys the ability to go play and play well,”. Flexibility is fine, but it looks like a lack of leadership right now. The Falcons need a clear plan to beat a team that wants to make a statement. Until Stefanski picks a guy, the Panthers have the edge.
