Panthers Win Ugly After Setting Franchise Penalty Record

The Panthers just won a game while committing 13 penalties for a franchise-record 149 yards. Here is how they pulled off the impossible against Philadelphia.

The most shocking number from Friday night isn’t the final score or the shots missed. It is the 49-point hole the Charlotte Hornets dug before the game even ended. That massive deficit happened right in front of their own fans at the Spectrum Center, leading to a rare and harsh reaction from the home crowd. The team fell 128-81 to the Atlanta Hawks in a blowout that left everyone in the arena stunned.

Charlotte guard Sion James tried to keep things in perspective after the disaster. He told reporters, “It’s one loss on our record,” but he also admitted the team needs to show up with more fight. James said the squad must “really see what kind of energy and fight we come out with tomorrow.” The players know they cannot afford to let this slide, especially with a tough opponent waiting for them on Saturday night.

Shooting Woes and Bad Decisions

The offense completely stalled out against Atlanta. The Hornets shot just 11-for-51 on 3-point attempts, which is a terrible rate for any team. Coach Charles Lee pointed out that the players made the wrong decisions with the ball too often. James agreed, saying, “We were putting ourselves in positions that we didn’t need to be in.” This lack of control led to turnovers and missed open looks that cost them the game.

Young swingman Brandon Miller is struggling to find his rhythm from deep. He has gone just 4-for-25 on 3-point attempts through two games this season. Despite the cold shooting, Lee said he has “the utmost confidence that some of these shots that he’s taking he’s going to knock down at a higher clip.” The coaching staff believes the volume of shots isn’t the main issue, but rather the quality of the looks they create.

Heat Face Similar Struggles

The Miami Heat are in a bad spot too, having lost both of their first two games. They fell 128-111 to the Detroit Pistons on Friday, giving up 38 points in just the third quarter. Even with superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo scoring 36 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, the team could not stop the bleeding. Per Field Level Media, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said, “We want to establish our mentality,” as they try to fix their defensive lapses.

Spoelstra knows that errors look worse when opponents go on big runs. He told the press, “How we collectively build a resolve,” is something the team must work on to get better. Both teams enter Saturday night’s matchup in Charlotte needing to turn things around fast. The Heat gave up 41 first-quarter points to the Timberwolves in their opener and now 38 to the Pistons. They need to stop the early collapses if they want to win.

Fixing the Mentality

Coach Lee said the boos from the fans are a signal that the players must do better. He stated, “If you hear boos, you’ve got to be able to play better basketball.” The loss was a wake-up call, but Lee sees it as a chance to learn. He asked his team, “When things aren’t going your way, what is your focus going to be?” The answer lies in controlling what they can control during those tough moments.

Both squads have something in common right now: they don’t like where they stand. The Hornets will try to recover from the drubbing while the Heat look to snap their losing streak. The game on Saturday night offers a chance to bounce back, but only if the players can fix their mindset and execution. As Spoelstra noted, “That’s what everybody is trying to do early on” in the season. The next 48 hours will tell if these teams can fix their problems.
