Forget the starters for a second. The real story of this game isn’t about who gets the first few snaps, but who gets the ones that actually matter. The Panthers need to see real growth from their young edge rushers, especially against a Bills offense that has been a playoff threat for years. This is a status check on a defense that needs to find its identity before the real season starts. If the Panthers want to compete, they need to see Princely Umanmielen make plays now.

Umanmielen’s Moment to Shine

The team signed Jaelan Phillips to be the top edge guy, and Patrick Jones is coming back from an injury to start alongside him. But those two won’t play much. The team held Jones out of practice on Wednesday with what they called an “illness”. That means the spotlight shifts to someone else. As the team’s primary designated pass rusher, Princely Umanmielen is expected to get an opportunity. Cat Scratch Reader suggests the coaching staff should assign him significantly more snaps than the top two players in this game. Getting him out in front of the Bills starting offensive line is the best way to see where his development stands. He is the guy fans should watch the most on defense.

Inside Linebacker Battle Heats Up

The competition at inside linebacker is just as tight as the edge spot. Head coach Dave Canales announced this week that the spot next to Devin Lloyd is up for grabs. The two fighting for the job are 2024 third-round pick Trevin Wallace and 2023 undrafted free agent Claudin Cherelus. In nickel packages and base defenses requiring two linebackers for coverage, this position holds significance. In theory, the job was Wallace’s to lose, but his inconsistent play and injury issues have opened the door. The individual who frequently filled in during Wallace’s absence has a solid likelihood of securing the role. On Saturday, both players will receive ample opportunities to impact the passing and rushing games.

Ransom Needs to Prove He Is the Starter

One safety has been a highlight of the preseason so far. From his safety position, Lathan Ransom has consistently delivered hard hits and laid the wood. Supporters frequently demand that he start alongside Tre’Von Moehrig. While some say Nick Scott isn’t going anywhere, Ransom is certainly making the coaching staff sweat. Cat Scratch Reader states that Ransom deserves substantial playing time with the first and second units as a starter. This is his time to show he belongs. The Bills have a potent offense, and they will test every part of the secondary. If Ransom can handle the pressure, he proves he is the guy the Panthers need for the long haul. The defense looks different when he is on the field, and that difference is what this team needs to win.
