Charlotte's young squad hit a wall Wednesday as Cade Cunningham's 30 points powered Detroit to a 97-89 win over the Hornets in a tough loss.

The Carolina Panthers are staring down a brutal Thursday night without four of their most critical players. Yahoo Sports reported that the team officially ruled out outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips, guards Damien Lewis and Torricelli Simpkins III, and cornerback Akayleb Evans. This news hits just days after a 43-13 shellacking by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, leaving the squad with barely any time to heal. A short week is always tough, but losing this much talent makes the task at Lambeau Field feel nearly impossible.

Phillips’ Absence Leaves a Giant Hole

Jaelan Phillips represents the biggest loss for the defense on paper. The $120 million edge rusher did not participate in any practice this week due to a hamstring injury, so he will miss the game entirely. Per Yahoo Sports, this timing is terrible because Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love likes to wait an extra second to launch deep passes. Without Phillips, the Panthers lack the big pass rush needed to disrupt Love’s rhythm. The math is simple: if the rush fails, the secondary gets exposed, and the offense cannot catch a breath.

The defensive backfield is already in shambles before Evans even got hurt. Starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson are already on injured reserve, which leaves the unit very thin. Evans is sidelined by a combination of triceps and knee injuries, which makes the available choices even more limited. If Evans cannot go, only Chau Smith-Wade and Will Lee III remain as healthy corners on the active roster. That is a dangerous lineup to send against a potent Packers passing attack.

Offensive Line Takes Another Hit

The offensive line is also reeling from a series of devastating blows. Right tackle Taylor Moton landed on injured reserve after his Week 7 injury, meaning the team is once again without both starting tackles. Left tackle Ikem Ekwonu is still not ready to return either. To make matters worse, guards Damien Lewis and Torricelli Simpkins III were listed as non-participants on Monday and are now ruled out.

The team also listed Bobby Brown III as questionable with a hand injury, though his full practice participation on Tuesday and Wednesday suggests he might play. Even if Brown suits up, the depth is gone, and the line must hold up against a relentless pass rush in cold weather.

Young and Coker Show Glimmers of Hope

Not every player on the injury report is a worry, which provides a tiny sliver of optimism. Although Bryce Young has a knee injury listed, he took part in all practices throughout the week. Wide receiver Jalen Coker dealt with a shoulder issue on Monday but also practiced fully on Tuesday and Wednesday. Ryan Fitzgerald showed up on the report because of an illness, yet he is noted as having practiced fully too. These three players must be at their absolute best for Carolina to have any chance of winning.

The final injury report with game statuses was released on Wednesday, confirming the four players out for the game. As Week 8 approaches, the Panthers must not fixate on the poor defeat against Tampa Bay, even though roster gaps are clear.
