The Carolina Panthers are facing a brutal reality check just two games into the 2026 season. Key defenders and a vital young running back are all dealing with nagging hurts that could derail the team before it finds its rhythm. This is not a minor bump in the road; it is a full-blown crisis for a roster that was supposed to be rising.
The Linebacker Corps Takes a Hit
Inside linebacker Devin Lloyd earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after a massive show in Atlanta, but that performance came with a heavy cost. Head coach Dave Canales confirmed to reporters that Lloyd missed Wednesday’s practice due to a calf injury that flared up once the adrenaline faded. Canales explained the situation plainly, stating, “Yeah, it just kinda started to flare up a little bit more once the game, once the adrenaline wore down.” The staff is taking it slow, noting, “He started to cool off and we knew something was there. So we’re just gonna take him one day at a time and see if we can get him back out there.” As reported by Yahoo Sports, Lloyd was not alone on the sidelines.
Outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips also sat out with a back injury, a concerning development for a player who signed a four-year, $120 million deal this offseason. Phillips has only recorded 2.0 sacks through two games, so every missed snap hurts the pass rush depth. The injury list grew even longer with tight end Darren Waller resting and inside linebacker Claudin Cherelus dealing with a shoulder issue. Safety Nick Scott also missed time with a rib injury, leaving the secondary thin. The Panthers need these veterans healthy if they want to stop opposing offenses from exploiting gaps in the middle.
The Backfield Bleeds Talent
The trouble does not stop on defense. Running back Jonathon Brooks, a third-year player who has already missed time due to two ACL tears, needs core-muscle surgery and is on injured reserve, out at least six weeks. With Brooks gone, starter Chuba Hubbard faces a heavier workload without much backup. The team might look to the trade market to fill the void, with Moe Moton at Bleacher Report suggesting Los Angeles Chargers running back Kimani Vidal as a potential target.
Acquiring a new back would require giving up draft picks, which general manager Dan Morgan may not want to do this early in the season. However, the team cannot afford to be without a viable running game if the injury bug keeps biting. The Panthers already signed wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette to the practice squad to add depth, but that does not solve the running back hole. Smith-Marsette has experience returning punts and kickoffs, but he is not a solution for the ball-carrying duties. The roster moves show the team is scrambling to find answers while their core stars struggle to stay on the field.
A Week of Uncertainty
The clock is ticking down to the next game, and the Panthers cannot afford more surprises. If the defense loses Lloyd and Phillips for an extended period, the pressure on the front seven will become unbearable. With Brooks shelved for weeks, the offense leans hard on Chuba Hubbard and risks becoming one-dimensional.
