The Carolina Panthers face a critical choice before the November 10 trade deadline. They must not trade defensive tackle Derrick Brown. Moving him would create a massive hole in a defense that is already struggling to stop the run. The team sits at 3-4 and fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero recently. Despite these changes, the defense has not improved much. Trading their most reliable player now would be a mistake.
Joe Person of The Athletic reported that the Panthers are not entertaining calls about Brown’s availability. This stance is the right one. The 28-year-old has been a cornerstone for years. He recorded seven pass breakups, five sacks, and 73 tackles last season. His stats this season show 21 tackles and five pass breakups through seven games. Judging his value by sacks alone is a mistake. He anchors the line while others try to generate pressure.
The Money Makes A Trade Too Costly
The financial side of a trade makes the idea even harder to justify. In April 2024, Carolina gave Brown a four-year, $96 million contract extension. That deal included $63.16 million in total guarantees. The team converted $16.83 million of salary into a bonus when restructuring his deal earlier this year. His 2026 cap hit dropped by approximately $13.55 million thanks to this move. A trade would leave the Panthers responsible for significant dead money. Finding someone capable of replacing his production would still be necessary for them.
Interim Coach Needs Brown To Step Up
Interim defensive coordinator Todd Wash needs Brown to be at his best. With only 10 games left, Wash aims to reverse one of the NFL’s worst defenses. The Panthers do not need another rebuild on defense. Production must begin from the players already on the roster. Brown has shown he can perform at a Pro Bowl level and remains under contract beyond this season. Dan Morgan, the general manager, ought to consider offers for players excluded from the future. But Brown is not one of those players.
The Panthers host the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Bank of America Stadium.
