The biggest shock isn’t that Brandon Bussi won a Stanley Cup in his first NHL season. The real surprise is that Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour refuses to treat him like a finished product despite the trophy. Most fans see a record-setting goalie and assume the work is done. The reality is far more demanding.
Brind’Amour made it clear that Bussi is still a student of the game. He stated that the team views the young netminder “No different than any player, we just talked about [Jackson] Blake or any younger guy that’s new to the league,” per The Hockey Writers. This approach might seem harsh for a guy who just won the big prize, but it keeps the standard high.
A Rookie Year That Broke the Mold
Bussi’s path to the top was anything but normal. Just days into the 2025-26 season, he shocked the league by being claimed off waivers from the Florida Panthers to start his campaign. From there, he went on a tear that no one predicted. He tied a franchise record with nine straight wins with a shootout victory against the Flyers back in December.
By the time the Olympic break arrived, his numbers were simply scary good. He sat at 23-3-1 with a 2.16 goals-against average, per Cardiac Cane. He didn’t stop there either. Bussi finished the whole season with a 31-6-2 record, a 2.47 goals-against average, an .895 save percentage, and two shutouts, The Hockey Writers noted. Cardiac Cane noted that he debuted in the NHL during the team’s third game, where he stopped 16 shots to secure a 5-1 victory over the Sharks.
The Final Push and the Next Step
The ultimate test came against the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final. Bussi played a huge role in game 6, stopping all 22 shots he faced to record a shutout and clinch the Stanley Cup. Now he faces his first full season under a new contract. He kicks off the initial year of a three-year, $5.7 million extension that he originally signed in February.
Despite the money and the ring, the coach wants more growth. Brind’Amour explained that they are “constantly looking for them, probably with the most upside, to get better because there’s a lot to learn still,”. He emphasized that they are looking for “all of the little things” for Bussi as a goalie. The coaching staff, led by Paul Schonfelder, is working on whatever specific skills Bussi needs to sharpen.
The goalie coach had a tough job balancing three netminders last year. Schonfelder managed Bussi, Pyotr Kochetkov, and Frederik Andersen during the 2025-26 season. Now the path is clearer. As of the report date, the Hurricanes’ goaltending tandem appears to be Bussi and Kochetkov, The Hockey Writers said.
Brind’Amour’s message is simple: keep sharpening. He told the media to “Just keep sharpening, and hopefully it shows in the way he plays,”. We are not even at the point to consider game one or what the team will look like yet. That focus on the future means the best is still ahead for the Cane faithful.
