Big Dreams on a Tough Course

The 126th U.S. Amateur Championship hit the historic Merion Golf Club this week. Nestled just outside Philadelphia in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, the course didn’t just test the best young players in the nation; it nearly broke them. Don’t let the lack of pro names fool you. This isn’t a minor league stop. It’s the biggest stage for college talent, period. Five North Carolina Tar Heels earned spots in this elite field, all hoping to make their mark on the national scene. The competition turned fierce immediately, with only the top performers moving forward after the first two rounds.

Carson Bertangole and Niall Shiels Donegan carried the load with strong scores.

According to reports, both players finished tied for 33rd place, ending just one stroke over par. That score was good enough to clear the cut line needed to advance to the match-play portion of the tournament. The other three Carolina golfers—Coltrane Mittag, Sihan Sandhu, and Grant Roscich—fell short of the +2 mark required to stay in the hunt. Their scores ranged from +4 to +11, ending their runs before the bracket rounds even began. It’s a brutal filter, isn’t it?

Match Play Battles and Hard Lessons

Once the field was whittled down to 64 players, the format shifted to head-to-head matches. Bertangole and Shiels Donegan handled their opening opponents with confidence and skill. Shiels Donegan won his match decisively, defeating his opponent by a score of 4&3. Bertangole also secured a victory, winning his bout 3&2 to keep his tournament alive. These wins proved that the Tar Heels could compete with the best amateurs in the country on a difficult day.

Then the road ended.

Unfortunately, both Tar Heels dropped in the Round of 32. Max Herendeen defeated Bertangole, and Jack Turner beat Shiels Donegan. The Tar Heel Blog reported that Turner went on to reach the quarterfinals, so there is no shame in losing to a player who made it that far. Shiels Donegan might have hoped for a deeper run, as he reached the semifinals in the 2025 event. The tournament format remains a brutal test that can knock out even the most prepared players in a single hole. Who needs a fairytale when you’ve got a draw like that?

A Foundation for Future Success

Even without a championship win, the performance of these five golfers offers a bright look at the program’s future. The US Amateur has long been considered a major event in the golf world, serving as a proving ground for future stars. Since all the big-name pros are ineligible, the spotlight shines on college players who are just starting their journeys. For UNC, having two players reach the bracket rounds shows the program is building a solid foundation for success.

The team can take pride in the effort shown at Merion Golf Club.

While the scores did not go far enough to win the trophy, the experience gained will pay dividends later. Per reports, the event featured plenty of stars who are currently playing at the college level. That’s the real prize here, isn’t it? The next step is waiting in the wings.
