Will Grier’s NFL career started and finished with the Panthers. The quarterback retired Wednesday, and Carolina placed him on the reserve/retired list. He is 31.
Grier had rejoined the organization in the spring, signing April 21 after Dallas released him March 12 at the end of parts of two seasons there. Carolina originally drafted him in the third round in 2019 out of West Virginia, where he played in 2017 and 2018 following two years at Florida.
That rookie season turned out to be the whole of his on-field career. Grier started two games for the Panthers in 2019, completing 28 of 52 passes for 228 yards with four interceptions. He never appeared in another regular-season or playoff game.
Everything after that was roster time rather than snaps. He spent 2021 through 2023 in Dallas, moved through Cincinnati, New England and the Chargers in 2023, landed in Philadelphia in 2024, then came back to Carolina this year.
His retirement leaves the Panthers with three quarterbacks: Bryce Young as the starter, Kenny Pickett as the veteran behind him, and undrafted rookie Haynes King out of Georgia Tech.
